Artist Statement
Jack and Jill Luxury Grocer offers the finest eggs, the freshest butter, and other everyday essentials from elite fashion brands.
It uses images, movement, and colors from high-end luxury fashion brands, paired with a local store from my hometown of Grand Island, Nebraska, where I grew up. The Jack and Jill logo has changed from its original design; however, it retains many of the same simple elements.
Transforming the Jack and Jill Grocery Store into a Luxury Grocery Store elevates it from an ordinary small-town store to one of greater significance. This fictional concept examines the notion of purchasing high-end goods in today's society. It explores how we spend money on everyday items, such as eggs and butter, through the lens of the world's most elite luxury fashion brands.
The artwork employs repetition, mimicking the way goods are displayed in a grocery store. The piece featuring the Jack & Jill logo incorporates plexiglass and is screen-printed, using colors and patterns from five major luxury fashion brands while playing with light and shadow to reveal the represented brands. The eggs are crafted from fine porcelain, bisque-fired to capture the delicate nature of real eggs, and are subtly labeled with luxury brand tags, echoing the way eggs are typically marked in grocery stores. The work with butter plays a central role in *The Price of Everything*, serving as a medium through which the artwork is created, leaving its imprint on the surface of the paper, marked by a luxury brand label.
Through the rebranding of these everyday items, we gain insight into what individuals are willing to endure to possess a luxury label.
